Ep. 500 - Ranger U and a contest!!!

Wow!! Scraptime made it to 500 episodes!! Thanks to all of you who give me the incentive to keep bringing you more and more episodes!! And there are no plans on slowing down!!

I wanted to do something different for the 500th episode. So when I was accepted into Ranger U, I knew this would be my 500th episode. To give you a peek inside to what the weekend is about!! A bit of background, Ranger U is an educational program offered by Ranger Industries (makers of all Tim Holtz Distress, Stickles, Claudine Hellmuth’s Studio paint Collection, Suze’s Melt Art products, plus other inks, powders and paints!) The program is organized and run by Tim Holtz, with Claudine and Suze teaching us about their products! It is a 3 day program, which runs from 9-6pm! You have to apply and 24 people are accepted! The students ranged from Store Owners, to Product Designers, to Designers, to Company Owners, to Teachers, to Me - the video blogger!! The program is offered in March and June!

I left Thursday - luckily for me it is only and 1 1/2 hour flight. Once at the airport I was meeting up with some ladies from Taiwan, the Netherlands, Barcelona and California! We shared a shuttle to Tinton Falls, New Jersey, where Ranger is situated.

The next morning we were raring to go!! We got to start our day with a tour of the Ranger factory! All of Ranger’s products are made and packaged right there! We saw big barrels of Stickles being put into their tiny bottles. We also saw Distress Ink pads being put together! It was very interesting to see all the behind the scenes. We even got some Stickles and Distress Ink hot off the presses!! We weren’t allowed to take any photos, but Tim has a video to share, showing a bit of the factory.

Then it was time to get down to work! We started learning lots of techniques using Perfect Pearls! We had every colour of every product available to play with!! It gave us a chance to use colours we may not use and see colour combinations others like! Then after lunch we played with embossing a bit!!

IMG_1504

For the rest of the day Suze joined us and we were melting away learning 8 fun techniques!! Friday night, even though there was a major rain storm, we had a BBQ in the warehouse which was a great opportunity to talk with the other students and some of the people who work at Ranger!

IMG_1549

Saturday Morning we started at 9am, this time with the lovely Claudine Hellmuth teaching us all about her Studio Paint Collection and Sticky Back Canvas. We learned a couple transfer techniques as well!! Then the afternoon was all about Distress with Tim! Distress Powder, Paint, Ink and Stickles!! We had another major rain storm that actually left us in the dark a few times! Then after dinner Tim stayed and taught us how to make his cool 3D flowers!!

IMG_1654

Sunday morning was a tough one since it was Daylight Savings Time. So although it was 9am, our bodies were sure it was 8am. Sunday was everything Adirondack!! We completed 29 tags once the day was up!! Then we got our cool Certificates, officially making us Ranger Certified!!!

And as Graduation present, we were presented with a beautiful box of Ranger Goodies to take home with us so we can practice!!

I want to thank Ranger for being a wonderful host for the weekend and for offering an amazing opportunity!! As well, a thank you to Tim, Claudine and Suze for sharing their creativity! A thank you to Patti for helping us throughout the weekend! Plus a Thank you to Stampers Anonymous and Tonic for giving us some stamps and scissors as well!!

You can check out my Ranger U Flickr set to see all of the pictures in the video!

Hi Christina

Congratulations on reaching 500, amazing!

I’ve been watching for well over a year now, and I love every episode. I’ve even kept some for ideas.

I love your clear concise style, you display all the products in depth, and I love that you also show the projects you’ve made from them. It really makes me want to go and buy the products, and follow your inspiration.

I especially like the mini-book, and the new techniques episodes. Some of my favourites include: Ep 290 December Mini-book, Ep 390 Graphic 45, and Ep 398 The Button Farm. But that’s only 3 of many!

Keep up the fabulous work, and I’ll keep watching. Thank you for all your work, inspiration and creativity.

I have been a subscriber to your podcast since very early. I love it. I constantly refer to it when I’m soursing new tools or product. From watching your podcasts I can get a truer impression of what the product or tool is like and if it will meet my needs. As well as that you have inspired me to try many new techniques that may have otherwise seemed beyond my capabilities. Your product reveals are great at wetting the appetite as so often here in Australia product seems to take ages to reach us. I commend you on a great service, keep up the good, no supurb work

I haven’t seen anyone else out there who has done anything close to what you do - covering CHA, demonstrating tools and products, making projects using them. And what a lucky lady being accepted at Ranger U! I am totally envious. Just keep on doing what you do and I hope to see more of your episodes for years to come. ~ Di

I like “test driving” products through your website to see if I’d like them or not. You select a variety of items. You also answer questions - so I’m glad to tell you I did get the Cinch!

Not letting you guys take pictures? That must have been torture for y’all! I understand, though! Congratulations on 500 episodes - what a feat!! The thing I love most about Scraptime is getting to see such a wide variety of products. I live in a small town and have to drive about an hour to get to a LSS or Michael’s and with 3 young kids, it doesn’t happen often. But with your podcast, I feel like I get to see things that I wouldn’t be able to find with my kids climbing out of the cart, picking stuff up, etc.! Plus I’m on a really tight budget, so I get a feeling if the products would be worth the money. Thanks for a great show - it’s really fun and informational. Even my 5 year old will say, “Let’s watch that lady that shows us how to scrapbook!”

I like to watch your videos because, as you once mentioned, you only talk about the products you like. I am introduced to a lot of products I don’t see on other blogs as well as hearing another opinion (yours)about products that have been reviewed by others. The same can be said for your instructional/technique videos. BTW, thanks for taking all those Ranger U pictures. I don’t know how you were able to remember to grab your camera while in the midst of “creating”. Also, CONGRATULATIONS on attaining quite a milestone - Video 500!

Happy 500 episode! I love your shows. They are all so informative. I just love how you first show each product and then you show something you made from each one. This really gives me an idea of how it can be used. I also love how you make a sample card of each color that are going to use. That is a great idea especially when you are not sure what color you want and you can go back to your color chart and choose without wasting your products.

I’m so jealous. I would love to send tree days at Ranger U. You lucky little devil! I know I would be in heaven seeing all that product at once and sitting there waiting for me to use it. Wow! That sure did look like a lot of work. I loved how they had you apply the methods you used on the back of the tags. So often you bring samples of things home, think you’ll do them sooner than later, and then when later comes you forget what you did to get that look. BRAVO to one of the newest Ranger U Graduates. Congratulations on your 500th show. What I love about the shows is that they are short, sweet and to the point, and very entertaining. Not only that, but I use them as a video reference library and have them on my iPod so I can get quick ideas on the go, for example at crops. It is not unknown for my iPod to go wandering around the tables as other ladies at these events have a look at your ideas and advice. A Scrapbooker for years, I’ve only just taken up cardmaking and stamping, so I’ve been able re-visit earlier episodes. I’m getting a Big Shot soon, so I’m going to be revisiting all relative episodes for that too. The length of the episodes is just perfect for quick ideas and tutorials. It is incredibly generous of you and your husband (and daughter!) to give up your time to give us all great advice and inspiration, and all for free. Thanks again, and all the best for the next 500.

Thank you for such a brilliant podcast. There are so many crafters our there, with millions of ideas and products, but how can you get access to them? You can visit stores and websites, but what happens if you don’t understand the technique, understand the product or can’t visualise the end results? Your podcast is so unique in that it shares the techniques and products available to achieve fantastic results, but each of us can apply them in our own creative way. Being from London in the UK, we are so much slower at latching on to new products that I feel I can really keep abreast of where the market is going through your podcast. You always present in such a down to earth way, that I never feel intimidated by your skills or experience and feel like I have had a friend around for tea who has left me buzzing with enthusiasm and creativity! Thank you Christine and Mark for all your hard work. Have a great break you deserve it!
